UnLinksys my heart

Turns out that Linksys is also joining in Make Steve Richer Day.

The Linksys WRT-54G—a crown for the marketer who thought up that name, a crown, I say—has decided that this whole providing a wireless signal for other devices to connect to is a way too bourgeoisie endeavor for it, and it is now pursuing a career in performance art. Or something. It’s certainly not putting out a radio signal.

Cue Darth Vader voice: You have failed me for the last time, Linksys.

At this point the AirPort Express that has allowed effortless streaming of iTunes music to the stereo in the living room is standing in the for the Linksys unit that is off somewhere finding itself.

It is time to make Steve richer by buying a second AirPort Express.

How are you making Steve richer today?

Speaking as someone who has 2 of those god-damned things sitting on a shelf, I can tell you that I should have warned you. They seem to last for about 3-6 months before the radio just starts taking naps whenever it wants to.

The good news is you can just blast a sveasoft firmware on it and set up a cron job to restart the radio every hour which seems to work okay. But I went the way of stuffing Steve’s pockets and just bought an Airport Extreme about 8 months ago.

I can’t even remember when I bought the thing, probably a year or two ago. It has been acting a little bit wonky for a while, with the radio cutting in and out every once in a while, but now it seems the little elf that handles the radio is on permanent vacation.

I’m way too disgusted to pop a Sveasoft firmware on there and set up a cron job…

The AirPort Express, as far as I’m concerned, is one of Apple’s best products evar.
